"...several people commented that they had been “triggered” in self-defense classes, suffering flashbacks, anxiety, and helpless feelings during and after the class."

This is EXACTLY what I experienced last night during my taekwondo class. We were doing full contact sparring and my opponent landed several very good strikes to my chest armor.

I suppose because the hit was so jarring to me it brought my mind back to about 6 years ago when I was the victim of a violent crime. I immediately wanted to stop, shut down and leave. Not to mention cry. I'm still feeling some residuals today.

Instances like these do nothing for my already lacking self-confidence which must improve so I may finally test for my black belt.

I've been doing EMDR therapy for years with great progress. But am still really stuck on this...

Any suggestions?

THANKS so much for this post!

Thanks, Mark! Mark is also a remarkable therapist who just published a great article on the phenomena of hoarding behavior in April's issue of Counseling Today. Way to go, Mark! I'll get you a trophy too!

Spring is a difficult time for me,because that's when I was first snatched off the sidewalk and began 3 years of terror. I was seven. I've done all the things Courtney mentioned, and when the going got too tough I asked the psychiatrist if I could have an antidepressant to help numb the emotional pain. His response was no--that I needed to walk thru the pain that I had avoided for nearly 40 years. Now, when Spring comes and my body begins to respond with depression, as soon as I realize what is causing it, I have tools to overcome it. I never thought of it that way, but truly a trophy sounds most appropriate for those of us who have made it through the darkness. Yes, a trophy would be wonderful. But for now, I'm just grateful to have the "tools in my toolbox" to overcome.

Great article! I am glad to hear people can move forward from bad experiences through this technique. "Rolling with the punches" is something I have had to learn to do. Thankfully, my experiences have not been so traumatic that they kept me stuck, although I know I have had to work at it sometimes. It is wonderful to hear success stories like this that may allow someone to "live again."
